Capital One built Eno, the banking industry's first natural language SMS chatbot, deploying Conversational AI & Virtual Assistants technology to handle balance inquiries, purchase tracking, bill payments, and spending summaries directly over text. Rather than limiting Eno to a single channel, the team extended the platform to a browser extension and mobile app. The browser extension uses two edge ML models — one that detects when a customer is on a payment page, and a second that classifies form fields — enabling automatic generation of unique virtual card numbers (VCNs) per merchant to protect against data breaches. A real-time fraud detection engine was added, allowing Eno to proactively alert customers to suspicious activity and lock cards autonomously while accepting natural language responses to confirm intent.
Eno established a self-reinforcing data flywheel: each customer interaction feeds richer behavioral signal back into the models, improving accuracy and enabling increasingly proactive service. The platform's multichannel architecture — SMS, browser extension, and mobile app — dramatically expanded training data collection and utility beyond what a single-channel deployment could achieve. On the operational side, Capital One's ML-based monitoring layer for mobile app infrastructure reduced incident resolution turnaround time by up to 50%, a meaningful reliability gain for a platform that millions of customers depend on daily. The VCN capability extended smoothly across a large number of online merchant sites without per-site manual configuration, compressing implementation overhead.
