KakaoBank, one of South Korea's leading digital-only banks, faced a core challenge common to neo-banking: how to deepen AI integration beyond surface-level chatbots and extend it into the transactional heart of financial services. Serving a broad customer base spanning all age groups, the bank needed AI that was accessible to 50-year-olds as much as to digital natives. More critically, no domestic Korean financial institution had yet applied conversational AI directly to core financial transactions such as fund transfers and group account management — leaving a significant competitive and service gap.
Starting in May 2025, KakaoBank executed a sequential rollout of four conversational AI services built on Conversational AI and Virtual Assistant technology. First came AI Search, providing natural-language guidance across KakaoBank product information and general financial knowledge. This was followed by an AI financial calculator for everyday computations including interest rates and foreign exchange. AI transfer then enabled customers to initiate fund transfers using plain conversational language, while the AI group-account manager automated membership-fee deposits and spending organisation within shared group accounts. By integrating AI directly into high-frequency transactional flows — not just informational queries — KakaoBank established a domestic first in the Korean financial sector.
Within eight months of launch, KakaoBank's conversational AI suite surpassed 3 million cumulative users, adding more than 10,000 new users per day on average. Adoption was strikingly uniform across demographics: users in their 20s or younger accounted for 26.4%, those in their 30s for 24.8%, those in their 40s for 23.7%, and those aged 50 or older for 25.1% — a near-equal distribution that validated the accessibility of the UX design.
